VINELAND -- The Landis Sewerage Authority installed a 50-foot-tall wind turbine at its South Mill Road site on Monday.

Sustainable Jersey, a state-based initiative, announced earlier this year the authority was in line to receive $10,000 to install a 3.7-kilowatt wind turbine, according to Dennis Palmer, the Landis Sewerage Authority's executive director.

"The wind turbine will truly make the LSA site an environmental power park with multiple green energy powers being produced locally at the site. We look forward to many tours in the future and a Rowan University engineering class is already scheduled," Palmer said.

The wind turbine, with three 6-foot blades that spin between 50 and 300 revolutions per minute, is the third green project to be built at the Landis Sewerage Authority this year.

In collaboration with the Vineland Municipal Electric Utility and Conectiv Energy, the first phase of a 4-megawatt solar field, known as Solar One, started operating about a month ago on a field at the Mill Road site.
The sewerage authority also has a co-generation plant that makes electricity and hot water from methane captured at the plant.

The wind turbine can generate power anytime the wind blows at 8 mph or more, though authority officials say it works best when speeds reach at least 12 to 15 mph.

The energy produced by the turbine will be used to power the authority's administration building. Though the power won't be directly available to city residents, it will reduce the overall demand placed on the VMEU's power generation systems, officials have said.
